Description

Native to South America, particularly Brazil, this plant stands out with its vibrant foliage, which opens in the daytime and folds up at night, giving it a dynamic and ever-changing appearance. The leaves are often deep purple or burgundy with a lighter-colored center, resembling a shamrock, which is why it’s also called a Purple Shamrock.

In addition to its beautiful leaves, the plant produces delicate white or pale pink flowers, adding a soft contrast to the bold foliage. It’s a compact plant that typically grows between 6 to 12 inches in height, making it ideal for indoor pots, hanging baskets, or as a decorative accent in garden borders.

Plant Care for Oxalis Triangularis “Love Plant” (Purple Shamrock)

Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal for the Love Plant. While it can tolerate low light, the plant thrives best in well-lit areas. Too much direct sunlight can scorch its leaves, so avoid placing it in full sun.

Watering: Water the plant when the top 1-2 inches of soil feel dry. Avoid overwatering, as this can lead to root rot. It’s better to let the soil dry out slightly between waterings. In winter, reduce the watering frequency, as the plant tends to enter dormancy.

Dormancy: Oxalis Triangularis may go dormant for a few weeks, especially during winter. If the leaves start to die back, don’t worry. This is normal. During dormancy, water less frequently and keep the plant in a cooler place. After a few weeks, the plant will start growing again.

Temperature: The Love Plant prefers temperatures between 60°F to 75°F (16°C to 24°C). It is sensitive to frost, so keep it away from drafts, open windows, or cold air.

Humidity: It can adapt to average indoor humidity levels, but if your home is very dry, misting the leaves occasionally or using a humidity tray can help the plant stay healthy.

Soil: A well-draining potting mix is essential. Use a standard potting soil mixed with perlite or sand to ensure good drainage.

Fertilizing: Feed the Love Plant with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Skip fertilizing during the plant’s dormant phase.

Propagation: Oxalis Triangularis is easily propagated by dividing its bulbs or tubers. Simply separate the bulbs during repotting and plant them in fresh soil.

Pest Control: Keep an eye out for pests like aphids and spider mites. Regularly check the leaves and treat any infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil.

Toxicity: The Love Plant is mildly toxic to pets if ingested. Keep it out of reach of cats, dogs, and other animals.
With its eye-catching purple leaves and easy care requirements, the Oxalis Triangularis is a wonderful addition to any indoor plant collection, bringing color and vibrancy to your space.
