Description

The multi-color variety features stunning foliage that can display shades of green, white, and pink, often with variegated patterns. Native to Southeast Asia and Australia, the plant is a climber or trailing vine, often used in hanging baskets or trained around supports indoors.

The waxy texture of both the leaves and flowers gives the plant its common name, while its delicate flowers, which can bloom in clusters of pink, white, or even yellow, emit a pleasant fragrance, particularly in the evening. The plant is relatively slow-growing but can live for decades with proper care. It’s also known for being easy to grow and long-lasting, making it a favorite among plant enthusiasts.

Plant Care for Hoya Carnosa ‘Wax Plant’ (Multi-Color)

  1. Light:

    • Hoya Carnosa thrives in bright, indirect light. While it can tolerate lower light levels, it will produce more flowers with brighter light. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can burn the leaves, especially the variegated varieties which are more sensitive.
  2. Watering:

    • Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings. Hoya plants store water in their thick leaves, so overwatering can lead to root rot. In general, water every 1-2 weeks, depending on the humidity and temperature in your home. Reduce watering in winter when the plant’s growth slows.
  3. Humidity:

    • Hoya Carnosa appreciates higher humidity levels, though it can adapt to average household humidity. Misting the plant occasionally or using a humidifier can encourage healthier growth and flowering, especially in drier environments.
  4. Temperature:

    • The Wax Plant prefers temperatures between 60°F to 85°F (16°C to 29°C). It does not tolerate cold drafts or temperatures below 50°F (10°C). Keep it in a warm spot, away from sudden temperature changes.
  5. Soil:

    • Use a well-draining potting mix, such as a mix for succulents or orchids. You can also create your own blend using potting soil, perlite, and orchid bark to ensure good drainage and aeration.
  6. Fertilizing:

    • Feed the plant with a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer once a month during the growing season (spring and summer). Fertilizing promotes healthy growth and can encourage blooming. Avoid fertilizing during the dormant winter months.
  7. Repotting:

    • Hoyas don’t mind being slightly root-bound and can remain in the same pot for a few years. Repot only when the plant has clearly outgrown its container, usually every 2-3 years, and use a pot that is only slightly larger than the previous one.
  8. Flowering:

    • To encourage blooming, give the Hoya Carnosa plenty of bright, indirect light and avoid disturbing it once flower buds appear. The flowers grow from specialized stems called peduncles, which should not be removed after flowering as they may produce more blooms in the future.
  9. Propagation:

    • Hoya Carnosa is easily propagated through stem cuttings. Simply take a cutting with a few leaves and place it in water or moist soil until roots form. This is an easy way to grow new plants or share with friends.
  10. Pest Control:

    • Hoyas are generally pest-resistant but can occasionally attract mealybugs or aphids. Inspect the plant regularly, and if pests are found, treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
  11. Toxicity:

    • The Hoya Carnosa is considered non-toxic to pets and humans, making it a safe choice for households with animals or children.
